Difference Between an E-Bike Torque Sensor and a Cadence Sensor?

The e-bike market is growing quite rapidly. With the dawn of these bikes, even the people least interested in cycling have engaged themselves with this outdoor activity. In 2021, the market value of e-bikes was more than USD 27 billion. By 2027, it’s not going to be any less than USD 54 billion. Well, that’s huge.

You are probably reading this article because you want to know more about e-bikes, their features, and how they work. So, let’s get that information chunk by chunk. This article revolves around the Torque Sensor and Cadence Sensor. If you want to know what a pedal-assist is and other related information, make sure to visit our website.

What is a Pedal Assist Sensor?

A Pedal Assist System (PAS) is a system that employs electric motors to assist your pedaling and make your journey faster and more comfortable. This system uses sensors that work side by side.

As the name implies, the function of the sensor is to sense whether a person is pedaling or not, and with what power, so that the motor works accordingly. Now, on the basis of this fact, there are two major types of sensors.

One is the cadence sensor that detects whether the person is pedaling or not, and the other is the torque sensor that detects with what force the person is pedaling the bike.

Cadence Sensor:

The cadence sensor is in the form of an electronic pod to which magnets are attached. The pod is then attached to the shaft of the bike. As said above, it only detects whether the person is pedaling or not, so it acts as the on/off button of the motor. As soon as the rider pushes the pedals, it starts working and signals the motor, and as soon as the rider stops pushing the pedals, it stops immediately.

Cadence Sensor Features to Consider:

  • The major advantage of this type of sensor is that you just need to push the pedal for the motor to get started. It usually has different levels of pedal assistance showing on a small screen right in the middle of the handlebar. Suppose you have set the value to 2 and you push the pedals lightly, the bike will be riding at the speed provided at level 2. Suppose you have raised it to 3, or 4, or more. The bike will automatically speed up even if you are pushing the pedals with the same energy as in level 2.
  • With that being said, you don’t have to work hard.
  • Often, it is assisted with a throttle that gives you a break from pedaling and does your work on its own.
  • It turns out to be cheaper.
  • Speaking of the disadvantages, the major one is that you need to push the pedal for a quarter or half of the rotation to start the motor, so there’s a delay that results in jerks and jolts.
  • Secondly, it works at a constant speed that corresponds to the assistance level set by you on the screen. The bike’s speed cannot be changed by accelerating or decelerating less or more.

Torque Sensor:

Remember the word “torque” from the physics textbook? Yes, that’s the basis of this type of sensor. It measures the amount of force that you exert on the pedal, which is then amplified by the motor. It is an advanced technology, and fewer companies have employed it in their e-bikes, but soon it is going to take over all the e-bikes in the world.

Torque Sensor Features to Consider:

  • Torque sensor e-bikes come with a lot of The major one is that you can control the speed of the bike.
  • The torque sensor detects the power with which you are pushing the pedal. If you are pedaling hard, the bike starts moving faster, and if you are exerting less energy, the bike moves slower.
  • Some people think of it as a disadvantage, but it’s actually a plus point in the sense that it feels like riding a normal traditional bike, which feels natural. Moreover, it’s better for your physical health.
  • Because you are doing most of the work by yourself, the battery lasts longer.
  • The wheel goes off immediately after applying pressure, so there are no jerks and jolts.
  • The disadvantage of the torque sensor e-bike is that it’s a bit more expensive as compared to a cadence bike. Secondly, you don’t have the benefit of the throttle.

What About the Combination of Both Sensors?

Many people like to use the combination of both sensors in their e-bikes so that one can compensate for the disadvantage of the other.

In this way, they can mix it up between controlling the bike speed themselves and just going on their journey at a constant speed. But the reason why both sensors are not present at the same time on the e-bikes generally available on the market is that their combination will result in a quite expensive bike that will have fewer sales.

But many people like to buy the extra sensor and install it on their bikes, having the other sensor to enjoy the benefits of both. Both are easy to install.

Which One is Available Commonly?

Among the two major sensors, the cadence sensor is commonly employed as it is cheaper. Moreover, some people like it better because they don’t want to put much effort into pedaling.

Where to Buy Torque Sensor E-Bikes?

Are you worried that most companies sell bikes with cadence sensors and the latest torque technology is used by only a few? Well, isn’t it good news that your research time has been narrowed down? We also sell premium and affordable e-bikes.

The sturdy material makes these bikes more durable. No compromise on comfortability is made. Making vehicles is all about considering ease and speed, both of which are well-acknowledged by the company.
