What is a Pedal Assist Sensor?

As the name implies, the function of the sensor is to sense whether a person is pedaling or not, and with what power, so that the motor works accordingly. Now, on the basis of this fact, there are two major types of sensors.

One is the cadence sensor that detects whether the person is pedaling or not, and the other is the torque sensor that detects with what force the person is pedaling the bike.

Cadence Sensor:

The cadence sensor is in the form of an electronic pod to which magnets are attached. The pod is then attached to the shaft of the bike. As said above, it only detects whether the person is pedaling or not, so it acts as the on/off button of the motor. As soon as the rider pushes the pedals, it starts working and signals the motor, and as soon as the rider stops pushing the pedals, it stops immediately.

Cadence Sensor Features to Consider:

  • The major advantage of this type of sensor is that you just need to push the pedal for the motor to get started. It usually has different levels of pedal assistance showing on a small screen right in the middle of the handlebar. Suppose you have set the value to 2 and you push the pedals lightly, the bike will be riding at the speed provided at level 2. Suppose you have raised it to 3, or 4, or more. The bike will automatically speed up even if you are pushing the pedals with the same energy as in level 2.
  • With that being said, you don’t have to work hard.
  • Often, it is assisted with a throttle that gives you a break from pedaling and does your work on its own.
  • It turns out to be cheaper.
  • Speaking of the disadvantages, the major one is that you need to push the pedal for a quarter or half of the rotation to start the motor, so there’s a delay that results in jerks and jolts.
  • Secondly, it works at a constant speed that corresponds to the assistance level set by you on the screen. The bike’s speed cannot be changed by accelerating or decelerating less or more.

Torque Sensor:

Remember the word “torque” from the physics textbook? Yes, that’s the basis of this type of sensor. It measures the amount of force that you exert on the pedal, which is then amplified by the motor. It is an advanced technology, and fewer companies have employed it in their e-bikes, but soon it is going to take over all the e-bikes in the world.

  • The torque sensor detects the power with which you are pushing the pedal. If you are pedaling hard, the bike starts moving faster, and if you are exerting less energy, the bike moves slower.
